Autumn Open Thread
The new season and some references from yesterday's post have reminded me of a poem I like for this time of year, when things fall away and you hope you'll see them again. Please join me in the comments section and post an autumn poem or quote that you like. Also, I'll be brainstorming titles for my upcoming lecture on the Saturday of Fall Family Weekend.
Now, the poem:
Now, the poem:
Beneath these shades, beside yon winding stream,
Lies Hawthorne's manly form, the mortal part!
The soul, that loved to meditate and dream,
Might linger here unwilling to depart,
But that a higher life has called away
To fairer scenes, to nobler work and thought.
Why should the spirit then on earth delay,
That has a glimpse of such bright regions caught!
And near another, Nature's child, doth rest,--
Thoreau, who loved each woodland path to tread;
So gently sleeping on his mother's breast!
Living, though numbered with the numerous dead.
We mourn! But hope will whisper in the heart,
We meet again and meet no more to part.

So, about that lecture . . . It's about the early history of Washington College. I'm going to talk a little bit about the Kent Free School, William Smith, daily rations of rum, fire, and more.
I'm really racking my brain for a title. Too bad all the good ones are taken.
To paraphrase P.D. James, today is one of those perfect St Andrews autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life.
The orignal quotation is:
"It was one of those perfect English autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life."
--P.D. James
